Record Wi-Fi Pesquisador Venezuelano consegue rede Wi-Fi a mais de 300 Km entre duas montanhas nos andes venezuelanos. Parece ser o maior alcance de uma rede Wi-Fi no mundo, monstrando o potencial para conexões no meio rural em paíse da América Latina. A matéria é da Engadget:



It's been a while since we've seen people muck around with long-distance WiFi -- not only are DIY solutions like cantennas possibly illegal, sexier technologies like WiMAX have emerged to better serve those long-distance IP needs. WiFi's flame burns on in Latin America, however, where researcher Ermanno Pietrosemoli has managed to shoot an 802.11 signal 382 kilometers (237 miles) between two mountains in the Venezuelan Andes. Pietrosemoli, who is president of Latin American networking association Escuela Latinoamerica de Redes, used some of Intel's long-range WiFi tech and $60 worth of Linksys hardware to achieve throughput of 3 Mbps in each direction and beat the former record of 310 kilometers (192 miles). Pietrosemoli hopes to use the tech to serve developing nations, but seeing as we barely get 3 Mbps in our WiFi-choked apartment building with the laptop sitting next to the router, we're hoping he lets us in on the secret as well.  ¶ 5:02 AM 0 Comentários Links para esta postagem

Call for Papers: Canadian Journal of Communication
Special Issue on: Wireless Technologies, Mobile Practices

Mobile wireless devices such as handheld pdas, cellular telephones, and portable computers are part of a changing landscape of communications and culture. In the last decade alone, for instance, the use of cell phones has increased fourfold in Canada signaling a remarkable shift in the telecommunications industry, the convergence of a number of technologies onto a single platform, and new ways of conducting person-to-person communication and creating community. In addition to these devices, Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth, WANS, and GPS comprise integrated segments of the new infrastructure of the so- called wireless world as well as an emergent vocabulary for citizens and consumers. The Canadian Journal of Communication invites submissions, in English or in French, for a forthcoming special issue on mobile communications and wireless technologies.   Cidade Digital É com prazer que anuncio o lançamento do livro "Cidade Digital. Portais, Inclusão e Redes no Brasil" (EDUFBA, 2007), organizado por mim e realizado em conjunto com os pesquisadores do Grupo de Pesquisa em Cibercidades, o qual coordeno desde 2000 (pioneiro no Brasil e credenciado pelo CNPq). Esse livro fecha a trilogia iniciada com os livros Cibercidade (E-Papers, 2004), Ciberurbe (E-Papers, 2005). Para mais sobre esses livros ver o link.



Cidade Digital aborda questões como o conceito de cibercidade, modelos de análise sobre o tema da inclusão digital, estruturas de redes wi-fi no Brasil, smart e flash mobs, governo eletrônico, conteúdo e interface dos portais governamentais brasileiros. Esse livro finaliza uma parte da pesquisa sobre o tema. A pesquisa continua mas agora se concentra fortemente na análise das tecnologias móveis e nas redes sem fio e nas transformações contemporâneas nos espaços urbanos, suas práticas e processos comunicacionais. Em breve estaremos lançando um livro sobre essa temática que terá o nome (ainda provisório) de "Cibercultura e Mobilidade".
